About Picky Eating

What is picky eating?
Researchers have found that Picky Eaters may display behavior such as: 

  1. Only eats a limited variety of food
  2. Only eats small meals
  3. Only eats what he likes
  4. Don’t like fruits or vegetables
  5. Won’t try new foods
  6. Isn’t interested in food
  7. Eats very slowly

Factors causing Picky Eating


  1. Inappropriate quantity and type of food for a given age or development stage
  2. Excessive snacking of unhealthy food
  3. Sensory difficulties such as taste, smell and texture
  4. Excessive drinking of fluids before and during meal



  1. Providing an inappropriate feeding environment
  2. Unable to determine hunger and satiety cues
  3. Incorrect feeding technique or routine
  4. Bad role model for eating habits
  5. Unrealistic expectations for the diet of their child



  1. Lack of appetite
  2. Difficult temperament and eating behavior
  3. Sensory difficulties such as taste, smell and texture
  4. Problems with swallowing food
  5. Short or long-term illnesses
  6. Allergies to specific food types

Consequences of Picky Eating

  • Picky Eaters may have significantly lower intake of certain nutrients 1
  • Increased susceptibility to infection 2
  • Poorer academic performance 3
  • Associated with long behavioral problems 4
