SPREADING LOVE & HAPPINESS DURING THE HARI RAYA SEASON

It’s finally here. The last few days before the long holidays of Hari Raya begin. Most Malaysians from all walk of life, ethnicity and religions are undoubtedly looking forward to spending some quality time with the loved ones. Others may lament that the “long holidays” are disrupting their work or businesses as colleagues and staffs are taking this opportunity to catch up with their families.

Malaysians are blessed with these kinds of opportunities at least twice a year, the other one being the Chinese New Year holidays. I’d say if we can’t change it, we might as well enjoy it.  We have 365 days in a year and it wouldn’t hurt to take a few days or even a week off if we have planned our work carefully. The one that matters is how we make full use of these periods to enrich other parts of our lives such that we come back to work refreshed, rejuvenated and with new perspectives.

LOVE AND HAPPINESS ARE TO BE SHARED

As a family person, I welcome this break as it gives us a chance to get away for a while and enjoy the time with the family. It is especially so when we have successfully completed the spiritual journey throughout Ramadan. It is time to celebrate our cleansed souls and spread some cheers to everyone around us.

The best way to do so is through sharing the love and happiness. That is the only reason why many would brave the crawling traffic and endure long travelling hours just so that they can reach home in time for the celebration. No one would want to be spending time alone away from the family.

GO BEYOND THE FAMILY

Being presence physically is the best option to spread love and happiness. However, not everyone is lucky enough to experience it as they are answering their calls of duty. They include the dedicated policemen on the road safeguarding our streets and homes, the medical staffs attending to patients or the soldiers in the frontline watching our shores. They could even be the street cleaners working overtime to clean the mess left behind by the city dwellers.

The next time we saw these people, we would make their day if we take a moment to stop and say “Thank you” and wish them well. On our way to “balik kampung”, it would be wonderful to wave a friendly gesture to acknowledge the traffic police manning the junction instead of just rushing through.  As we stopped at the petrol stations, offer a pat on their back to the personnel for working extra hard entertaining tired and irate motorists.

The list is endless. Coupled with a sincere smile, we would have undoubtedly share and spread the love and happiness to them.  It will quickly spread further as their days are slightly brightened, motivating them to deliver their job even better.  When they finally go home, they will do so with a satisfied smile knowing that their sacrifices were well worth after all. Their spouses and children will also welcome a happy person while we can take comfort knowing that we were part of their happiness.

MANAGE EMOTIONS

It is easy to share and spread the love during happy times but amazingly, many still fail to do so. They let the elements and environment to overcome their emotions. They use maddening crowd, traffic congestions and hot weather as excuses to behave badly towards fellow travelers or authorized personnel who are working hard to make the experience more pleasurable. They turn an unfriendly face and their words are as harsh. Yes, they feel good for a while but they forgot that the negative energy will soon multiply, affecting thousands other people.

A better strategy is to manage our internal emotion first before facing the world. Take this opportunity to apologize to our spouse, children, family or friends for any wrongdoings. Ask and we will be forgiven; we will then feel better and ready to smile again. Forget and forgive them too even if they have never asked for it.

HAPPINESS IS LITERALLY IN OUR HANDS

Let’s be proactive by saying, doing and passing the language and actions of love. Hug a little tighter, kiss a little longer; wish good wishes to others a little bit more. There is no better time to begin than now when everyone is in jovial mood. Forgive, forget and let’s start all over again. We don’t have to worry about how others will react because in doing so we are actually working to control our own happiness. Have a lovely and joyous Aidilfitri everyone!
